MISSING HUNDREDS.

THE MYSTERY DEEPENS. NO SIGN OF THE THIEF. The disappearance of over £IOOO from the premises of the Mutual Auction Rooms and the inexplicable presence of many pounds worth of silver in an alley way, on Wednesday morning form a mystery which is going to exercise the minds of at least two parties for some time —the police and the syndicate of showmen to whom the money belonged. The lack of clues is baffling, and it is a perplexing problem to know where to start. There is a broken window in the case, through which it is difficult to imagine thieves effecting an entrance. There is a large sum of money missing, and another substantial portion of the valuable loot reposing safely in the detective office, after having been abandoned and left to the mercy” of any prowler. The avarice which goes with dishonesty must have been remarkably well under control as far as the mysterious thieves in this case are concerned Three figure sums are not usually ignored in that way. The police know little new, and ChiefDetective Lewis when asked about the inquiries being pursued said “We’ll be chasing it up for a year.’’ One fact stands out clearly. There is reported to be £IOOO in the wrong hands, whether the thief be in or out of Dunedin, and until the mystery that surrounds its disappearance is solved the Exhibition city must bear the odium of doubtful suspicion, for “facts are chiels that winna ding,” and mystery surrounds a large sum of money, which reports state has been stolen,.
