An interesting vessel on her wav to Australia is the Finnish steamer Wasaborg. She sailed from Danzig on January 27 for South Africa, Melbourne, and Sydney. This steamer was a former trader to Australia, when she was known as the German-Aus-tralia steamer Iserlohn. Of 4692 tons gross, she was built at Hamburg in 1909. Incidentally, the Wasaborg Is the first Finnish steamer to eqgage in the trade with Australia. The big Finnish four-masted barque Pommern, laden with 9276 tons of Caledonian coal, was towed to sea from Newcastle on the afternoon of March 18. This is the first sailing vessel to leave Newcastle this year coal-laden for a foreign port. A big contrast to the pre-war days, when something like 30 or 40 sailing vessels left the New South Wales port for the first three months of the year, nearly all bound to South America. While other sailing ships have been able to obtain some sort of cargo, and have sailed from Australian ports on return trips to Europe, the British four-masted barque Garthneill is still lying at anchor in Port Philip Bay, with only a skeleton crew on board. The Garthneill was one of the first sailing ships to reach Melbourne from Europe last spring, berthing at Williamstown late in October to discharge a cargo of coke from Grangemouth (England). On completion of discharge the Garthneill moved to a bay anchorage, while negotiations were begun with the object of obtaining a cargb for Europe. These efforts were unsuccessful, and most of the crew were paid off The future movements of the Garthneill are at present uncertain Attempts are sti’l being made to find a cargo. If these attempts do not succeed the vessel may sail for Europe in ballast, though it is possible that she will remain in Australian waters till next wheat season. MOTOR LINER ASTURIAS. The Roval Mail liner Asturias, 22,500 tons gross, 20,000 horse power, the largest and most powerful motor liner in the world, left Southampton on February 26 on her maiden voyage to South America.
