COMEDY SUCCESS FUR DUNEDIN. The next J. C. Williamson attractioi is "The Farmer’s Wife,” a reigning Lon don comedy success by Eden Philpotts which win be staged at His Majesty'll Theatre commencing to-morrow (Saturday) evening, for a short season of four nights only. The play will introduce to theatregoer* many new London artists, and bring back several who have appeared here before. Typically English in appearance is Don* Johnston, who plays the devoted housekeeper of Applegarth Farm. Originally playing "flapper” roles with Seymour Hicks, she graduated to Shakespeare festivals at Stratford-on-Avon and to leading roles in comedy-drama. One of the principals of Ethel Irving's company which toured the dominions some years, ago was- Townsend Whitling. He plays the faigner as well as producing the company. His London exncrience includes comedy, drama, and nfusical comedy. Recently he was appearing with Mrs Patrick Campbell. Violet Lev. who plays the fox-hunting widow—one of the many the farmer considers willing to marry him —also toured with Ethel Irving. An outstanding success of the present Australian tour is Susan Richmond's sketch of Thirza Tapper, a spinster whose girlishness is persistent. The comedy also introduces a tangled skein of love interest among a quartet of younger people. One of the farmer’s daughters will be plaved bv Frances Cave. Edwin Brett, Douglas Vigors. Graham Stuart, and Emmeline Orford are among the other players in the company. The cast also include* Mile Engler. Tatty Landau. Reginald New. son. Arthur Greenaway, and Eardlev Turner. “The Farmer's Wife” is a plav of quaint tvpes and characterisation, and i* described by a Sydney critic as “the biggest laugh for years.” The Herald (Auckland) says: “The first-night audience fairly revelled in the delicious humour of the nlav. the rustic odour of the white-washed kitchen, and the amazing love affairs of the village peoplg.” The Fox nlans for the season are now nnen Tl-„ Bristol.
