PAYING THE PENALTY.
OFFENDERS AT HOKITIKA. (Pbb United Press Association.) HOKITIKA, April 8. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day Herbert Coodsir. a recent arrival from Central Otago, on two charges of illegally having possession of a total of 117 opossum skins trapped in the vicinity of Lake Kanieri, was convicted and fined £5 and costs on each charge. A charge against the licensee of the Railway Hotel of selling and exposing for sale liquor after hours was dismissed. The evidence showed that following a fire in Baty's garag-> on a recent Sunday morning the licensee, whose premises adjoin the destroyed building and which were in grave danger for r while, invited the firemen and those assisting, to partake of refreshments. Arising out of the same circumstances the barman and a young man were convicted, the former for exposing liquor and the latter with being found on licensed premises without legal excuse, the Magistrate holding that a person cannot enter a hotel even at the invitation of the licensee during prohibited hours for the purpose of having a drink. The Westland County Council proceeded against several proprietors of motor lorries for failure to take out heavy traffic licenses. Fines of £5 and costs were inflicted in each case.
