POTATOES FOR EXPORT.

AUSTRALIAN REGULATIONS. The following regulations governing the importation of potatoes into New South Wales have been published in the New South Wales Government, Gazette;—“There should be two grades of potatoes—namely, No. 1 and No. 2 grade. These grades shall consist of potatoes which are sound, of similar varietal characteristics, and of normal shape, practically free from dirt, and other foreign matter, and not affected by second growth, sprouting, injury, or deterioration. Potatoes of No. 1 grade shall, in case of round varieties, be no less than i 1-oin in diameter, and in case of long varieties, shall not be less than 2in in diameter. The diameter of potatoes in No. 2 grade shall not be less than llin. Potatoes shall be deemed to comply with the above-mentioned grades if at least 92i per cent., by weight thereof, comply with the requirements as to size, and if at least 95 per cent, hy weight comply with the other requirements of the said grades Potatoes shall not be packed for sale, or sold unless they comply with one of the grades mentioned in the preceding regulation, and unless the grade is legibly written on the covering, in letters not less Ilian 2in in height. Provided that: (at Potatoes which are intended for planting, and which comply with the requirements of the above grades, except as to size, mav be packed for sale, or sold, in covering* which arc legibly marked “seed potatoes' 1 (h) Potatoes which are intended for stock food and which do not comply with the above grades, may be packed for sale or sold in coverings, legibly marked “stock food. 1 ’ An oflicor of the Agricultural Department lias to come to Timaru from Christchurch to certify that potatoes submitted for cxnort here have not come from a district which is infected hy powdery scab.
