The latter died at Biaxrit* (Franca), during a tea dance.—A. and' N.Z. ■Gable. • Sir George William Forrest was born oa . Jonuacy S, 1846, and was educated at St. John’s College, Cambridge. He read for the bar, and was a member of the Inner Temple. In 1872 he was appointed to the Bombay Educational Department, and was employed on special duty in connection witb_ Bombay records. In 1887 he was ; appointed professor of English history at ' Elphinstowe College, and Director of Records, Bombay, in 1888. From 1891 to 1900 he was Director of Records, Govern- ’ meat of India. He retired in 1800, and was knighted in 1913. Included' in his publications are “Life of Lord Clive,” “life of Lord Roberts,” and the “History of the Indian Mutiny.’’ , : Almiral Sir Ernest Charles Thomas Troubridge was born in July, 1862. H* was Naval Attache at Vienna, Madrid, and ? Tokio from 1911 till 1904, and captain and .' chief of staff, Mediterranean, from 1907 till 1903. He was chief of staff, Admiralty, 1911 till 1912, commanded the Mediterranean Cruising Squadron in 1912, • tna head of the British Naval Missoa to Siberia in 1915, and admiral commanding on the Danube in 1918. He was knighted in 1919, and retired in 1921. MEW.L GEORGE. LONDON, January 30. (Received Jan. 31, at 6.5 p.m.) The death of W. L. George, the novelist, is announced.—A. and N.Z. Cable. Mr George was bom in Paris on March 30, 1882, and was educated in" Paris and Germany. He has contributed to most London publications, and has acted as special, correspondent for various papers ; in France, Belgium, and Spain. He served in the French army, and during the war he acted as section officer in the Ministry of Munitions. In addition to being the author of various political and economic works he wrote several novels, the-first being “A Bed of Roses” in 1911. - 1 MR W. C. GELBEY. LONDON, January 30. (Received Jan. 31, at ILS p.m.) The death of Mr W. C. Gdlbey, chairman of the well-known wine firm,, is announced. - . ; MR P. G. PRYDE. : The death occurred on Saturday at his residence, Castle street, of Mr P. G. •> Pryde, who was a prominent figure in the educational life of Otago by reason of.his connection with the Otago Education Board, of which body he was secretary for many years. . ■ The late Mr Pryde was born in Caitb-ness-shire, Scotland, and arrived in New Zealand as a lad of 16 years, with the intention of devoting his life to-agrfcal- : ture. After two years, during which time he underwent considerable hardship, he was compelled by ill-health to abandon the dream of his earlier years, and Was induced by friends to accept a cadetship in the Education Department of the Otago Provincial Government. Entering the public service on August 1, 1869, Mf Pryde speedily rose to the position of - cljief clerk, and on the removal of Mr .(latterly ■ Dr) Hislop, to Wellington, to take up the position of first Secretary for-Educa-tion, he became acting-secretary to -the Education Board in Dunedin. Mr Pryde carried on the duties of the department ns acting secretary from the close of 1877 : till the first members of the board were appointed, and at their first meeting da April, 1878, he was unanimously appointed secretary and treasurer, which position he held until his retirement some years ago. The deceased gentleman was an officebearer in Knox Church, but owing to illhealth has been unable for some time past to take anything but a general interest in church and social affairs.
