ENTERTAINED* BY CALEDONIAN CLUB. The record of including both the winner and the runner-up of the singles bowling championship of the Dominion In its memtosTw celebrated by the Caledonian Bowling Club on Wednesday evening, when members assembled to honour the champions from the club at the pavilion. Mr J. H. Hamel, president of the club, occupied the chair, and among those present were the Hon. C. E. Statham, Mr'H. F. M. Mercer (president of tho council of the Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association), and Mr Alex. MTvenzie (president of the -Dunedin Bowling; Centre). The attendance was very large and representative. The loyal toast was honoured, the chairman then proposed the toast of Ihe Singles Championship Winner and the Runner-up." In humorous vein he referred to the characteristics of Mr Foster and Mr Tretheway. The latter, though a recent acquisition of the Caledonian Club, had had great success as a member of the Caversham Club, and had done well at minor tournaments. Anybody who had watched the final game between the two Caledonian players would acknowledge that a great exposition of the game had been given. Mr Foster had previous great performances to his credit. In 1918 ho had won the Dominion singles championship after a great struggle with that fine player Maxwell Walker. In 1919 he had much success at Southland; won the local champion of champions contest in 1922; and at'Camara last Easter won the singles championship. Mr Foster, as a singles player or a skip, was a gentleman and a man of character. The chairman concluded by presenting Messrs Foster and Tretheway with framed photographs of themselves, and with gifts for Miss Foster and Mrs Tretheway. In his reply, Mr Foster detailed many of the games he had played, much to the amusement of his listeners. Mr Tretheway also responded briefly, mentioning several interesting events in the course of his progress to the final stages. Other toaiitji honoured Included “Parliament of New Zealand” (proposed by Mr J. J. Marlow and responded to by the Hon. C. E. Statham), “The Winning Rink" (g*vIng an opportunity for replies by each of Its members, who were all present), “The City Council" (proposed by Mr R. Procter and responded to by Cr J. S. Douglas), and several other toasts. During the evening an excellent musical programme was presented.
