SWIMMING.
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE ANNETTE KELLERMAN CUP. (Pkom Opr Own Correspondent.) NAPIER, January 28. The Annette Kellerman Cup race took place this afternoon under the very best conditions possible. A three-mile course had been marked out at Westshore, and the spectators on the shore had a full view of the whole distance. The competitors were: —Miss Bdser (Hawke’s Bay). 29min; W. G. Morpeth (Wellington). 25min; W. Toomey (Taranaki), ISmln ; C. Plumtree (Taranaki), 16min ; A. Bolam (Canterbury), 12imin: F. Ryan (Wellington), 12min; L. Russell (Hawke’s Bay), 9Jrain; D. W. M’Teague (Gisborne), 61min ; L. Hill (Canterbury), 2imin; J. Enwright (Auckland), Imin. Baird, on scratch, did not start. The results were:—Bolan, Ihr 41min 21 2-ssec, 1; Enwright, Ihr 32min 20sec, 2; Morpeth, Ihr 57min 39sec, 3; M’Teague, Ihr 59mln 42sec, 4. Jack Enwright put up a wonderful swim. He was the last man to leave the jetty, and at the finish was only from 12 to 15 yards away from Bolan. Hill struck trouble. Ho was going well when he was attacked by cramp. The salt water also affected his eyes badly, and for a few minutes he had to stop as he could not see. Nevertheless, ho resumed, and finished fifth. Ryan and Russell were both attacked with cramp and retired. Miss Bdser completed the course. Enwright received quite an ovation. He has started five times, gaining one first and four seconds, and ho has also put up the fastest time for the race on two occasions. Had Enwright been successful to-day the cup would have become his own property. Morpeth, of Wellington, was complimented upon finishing In second position, as he is by no means as young as the other competitors.
