SPORTING.

FORBURY PARK MEETING. OPENING DAY, BLACK ADMIRAL WINS CUP. FINE WEATHER AND GOOD SPORT. The Forbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting 'opened yesterday in beautifully fine weather, a mi|d breeze tempering the" rays of the sun and making the conditions ideal for racing. There was a large attendance, which included several officers from the French warship 'Cassiopee. Several members of the Trotting Association were also on the scene for the first time and were very favourably impressed with Forbury Park and its appointments. The track was in good order, but apparently a bit on the slow side, although providing excellent going with a nice cushion to break the jar. The card supplied some interesting racing, and despite some undesirable large fields only a couple of minor accidents occurred during the running of a race. A. Butterfield had the misfortune to break his left collar-bone when Schoolmate tripped up during a preliminary prior to the Electric Handicap. The Dunedin Oup saw the downfall of a particularly strong fancy in Nelson Derby, who was fifth instead of where his supported confidently expected to find him placed by the judge. Logan wood gave trouble at the post and swung round serveral times after the field had been ordered to line up. Countryman followed his example and was broadside on when the rest of the field went away. It seemed as if a blg_ risk of trouble caused the driver of Nelson Derby to check his horse instead of sending him into speed ai once. Logan Chief had also to be steered out of trouble, and the fact that Countryman blocked the way certainly did not assist the chances of those who were behind him in the handicap. Nelson Derby was soon collared bv Logan Chief, whilst Prince Pointer also got close up to the son of Nelson Bingen, and Norice, who thus had his chance seriously impaired. Nelson Derby had his name called as a winner when about half a mile from home, but he was wide on the outside and covering a lot of ground. The only one who would have seriously troubled Black Admiral as the race was run appeared to be Queen’s Own. She was always well placid on the rails, and when moving uo at tho far turn, whilst Black Admiral Rad also improved his position, she appeared to be blocked. From the home turn she was conceding about four lengths to the winners, and then suffered defeat bv a little over a length, they ran the first half in Imin 10 l-ssec and the first mile in 2miu 19 l-ssoc, so that the pace was considerably improved over the final half of the journey. The Otago Handicap was expected to provide a tough battle with the backmarkers holding a good show, but those on tbs limit set a solid pace, which proved to severe for the horses with fully exposed form. Each of these events carried trophies, and their presentation was marked with appreciative applause. A Stood deal has been said at times about Mr M. E. Dunnes starting, and some more criticism was heard being levelled at it in connection with yesterday’s racing. Mr W. Budkin made one slight mistake ' in placing Dixie s Pnde third in the King George Handicap, but this was afterwards rectified. Taken all round it was an enjoyable day’s sport, which should whet the sportsmens appetite for a further participation in it with the final card on tho programme. Katute broke up at the start of the vauxhall Handicap, and Peter Eyre also mixed at the move off. Credit Slip soon established a good lead from Nelson Ata. Woodbine and Real Lady were following the leaders. Nelson Ata got to Credit Slip live furlongs and a-half from home, and the latter put in a bad break. Nelson Ata appeared to bo a sure winner, but in the last quarter Real Lady and Wildbino were putting in good work, whilst Credit Slip was again going well and rapidly making up ground. A good race home saw Real lady get up and beat Credit Slip over a length, whilst Nelson Ata, who tired in the last 50 yards, was dose up, third, just in front of Wildbine. Katute did not get going until the race was half over, and then stepped at such a gait that must have made him very dangerous if ho had begun properly. Schoolmate fell whilst doing a preliminary for the Electric Handicap, and Butterfield broke a collarbone. H. Frost took his place in the saddle. Maiwhareti, Hydaspers, St. Maura, Rosie Nut, Lenamhor, and Golden Sun were all well supported for the race. Reta swerved at the start and caused trouble. Bismurate, Schoolmate, Edwin Harwin, and Lady Embrace failed to strike off when the field was sent _ away. _ Ilydaspers led off smartly and Maiwhareti soon reached second place, with Ratana, Golden Sun. and Lenamhor close up. Hydaspers carried on the running, but Lenamhor had him beaten 50 yards from home. Golden Devon came with a good rum, and landed into second place a length behind the winner. St. Maura was just beat for second place, and Hydaspers was close up fourth. Menember and Rosie Nut w-ere close to the front bunch. Golden Devon put up an excellent performance by giving away 60 yards and beating a big field to get near the winner at the finish. Menember also went a good race, and was putting in good work over the final quarter, but they were a bit too good for him at the handicap. The quartet which lined up for the Musselburgh Handicap did not give a good exhibition of trotting, as each one was skipping throughout the race. Kelman made it as solid as possible, and Nelson M'Kinney spoilt his chance by putting in bad breaks. Swiftbine put in several breaks, and Young Carbine lost his chance at the start. Nelson Derby was backed down to less than evens for the Dunedin Cup, and carried more than twice the support accorded Countryman, who started second fourite. Loganwood, who was on the rails gave trouble by declining to stand up. This upset some of the others, and as they were sent away Countryman was side on andturning back. He blocked the run of those behind him, because they had to keep out of the way. Oulrnet did not get away. The start would have been more satisfactory if Loganwood, after playing up, had been promptly sent to the outside of the track. Loganwood, Queen’s Own. Black Admiral, and Talaro were the leaders as they raced ont of the straight, and at the end of the first circuit Lognnwood was in charge of a close field, whilst Logan Chief had joined Nelson Derby. Talaro broke as they left the straight the second time, and anything seemed to have a chance as they commenced the last lap. Black Admiral shot to the front as they rounded the top, where Queen’s Own on tho rails seemed to get pocketed. Black Admiral was over three lengths in front of Queen’s Own as they turned for home, and had to be driven right out to beat her a length and a-half. Loganwood was about four lengths away third, and then came Talaro and Nelson Derby. Only two were struck out of the 33 on the card for the Southland Handicap. The unwieldly-looking field w-as fairly set when sent away, but several failed to get going. Final M'Kinney and Day Pointer soon singled themselves out, and Jolly Pet ran into third place. In the last lap Jolly Pet went clean away, and won pulling up by five lengths from Avenger, who beat Rose Thorn by a length. Rosethorne was one of those who dwelt on the mark. Final M'Kinney commenced to stop over two furlongs from home. Ivy Ticking got a sulky smashed, and Ruby Carbine lost her driver. The Otago Cup for straight-out trotters was generally predicted as likely to prove a particularly hard race to won. Woodlass won well in 4min 41 4-ssec, so that the hack markers were set a rather severe task. Audobell had a good chance of getting second money, but he broke shortly after following Woodlass into the home stretch. Money Spider, who went out favourite, broke up early in the race, and others who mixed were Judge Hancock (when running a good race), John Mauritius. Young Blake, Bonny Spec, and Charles Dixie amongst those who were well backed. Escapade finished close to the placed lot, and put up a good performance. Cardinal Logan was half turned when they went away in the King George Handicap, and lost a good deal of ground. Bing Boy broke up, and Firelight hung on the mark. Haunui and Silk Thread took up the role of pace-makers, and they showed the way to Dixie’s Pride and Some Wilkes. Rita Rye ran up to the leaders seven furlongs from home, but shot her bolt four furlongs off the poet. Silk Thread drew put going down the

back, and finally stalling off Trenand, w'on by a length. Cardinal Logan did well to finish fourth, but Dixie's Pride, Some Wilkes, and Haunui found the distance too far, or, in other words, a few otners too good for them on the figures. Cardinal Logan would have given a lot more trouble if he had moved off at his handicap. Lady Embrace reared at the barrier rise in the Flying Handicap, and refused to go away. Brentloc began well, and looked like winning all the way, but Bruce, who did not begin well, finishing on strongly, got up in time to make a dead heat. Roicole was third into the straight, but Becky uogan beat him in the run home for a place. Ivy Audobon dropped out a long way from home, and Escort led her past the post at the finish. The totalisator handled £28,867 during the day, as compared with £26,038 for the corresponding day last year. Results: YAUXHALL HANDICAP. RICCARTON GALLOPS. (From Our Special Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 28. There will he a useful contingent of Canterbury horses lor the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting, and their work is giving some interest to the training operations at Riccarton. The conditions were pleasant this morning, when most of the galloping was done on the plough. Haze did an easy circuit, running home the last threw furlongs at three-quarter pace, while Nincompoop was restricted to half-pace work. These two are pretty certain for the Wiugatui trip. Both horses look well, though Percy Mason is not setting Haze many severe tasks. Front Rank, looking in good order after her trip to Trentham, did a round at half to three-quarter pace. Limerick was going better than Windshield at the end of five furlongs run m Imin 4 4-osec. Scrip went well in a spin over five furlongs, which she left behind in Imin 4sec. Glentruin reeled off six furlongs in Imin 15 l-ssoc. She carried a lightweight, but it was a smart gallop. Count Cavour and Celerity JI, both with light-weights, covered six furlongs in Imin 'ls 4-ssec. Count Cavour, on the outside, was going the better of the pair at the end, but the effort of Celerity II was also very attractive. Footfall, with Sparklight as a mate for the last seven furlongs, covered a mils and a-quarter in 2min 15sec, the pair finishing on terms. Countersign ran throe furlongs very comfortably in 39scc. She is in good fettle at present. Crossbow shaped better than Kilcannich in a half-mile sprint run in 52sec. His Majesty and The Harp occupied 38sec over throe furlongs. Bonskirl covered seven furlongs on the No. 7 grass in Imin 32 2-osec. Brightliug and Lady Swinton sprinted half a mile on the grass in 50 2-ssee, and were going on well at the end. Assurance and Kilbox were companions in a useful five-furlong spin on the grass. Paperchaso covered five furlongs in Imin 2 3-ssec, Glcnalmond joining in for the last three. It was a smart performance. Sun Up sprinted three furlongs in 37 I-ssee, while Tarleton was going well at the end of five furlongs which occupied Imin 4sec. EGMONT RE-HANDICAPS. Dalgety at the Dunedin Gup meeting. It is doubtful if Paper Chase will bo sent down although she is now doing well in her work. W. Holmes, who lias a small team in work at Riccarton, is going to Canada with Mr F. Beban’s horse early in February. Holmes arrived in Wellington from. Auckland last week with the throe youngsters by Quin Abbey, and these, with the Kilbroney colt purchased at the Elderslie sale, will wait at Riccarton until they can be shipped to their new home. Holmes was a fair horseman in his day, amongst his best wins being the A.R.C. Royal Stakes on Screw Gun, the Great Northern Oaks on Isolt, tho C.J.C. Welcome Stakes on Tolstoi, the Now Zealand Oaks on Gladsome, the Canterbury Cup on Multiform, the Great Autumn Handicap on Gold Leaf, the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes on Screw Gun and Formosan, the Winter Cup on Spider, the Dunedin J.C. Handicap on Starshot, the D.J.C. Champagne Stakes on Formless, the Forbury Handicap on Red Lancer, and the Hawke’s Bay Stakes on Multiform. Another extensive stud) of thoroughbreds in New South Wales is advertised to go to auction at :an early date. The Stedmere stud, owned by Sir Hugh Denison and Mr H. G. Raymond, is to be dispersed next month, and, as the landed property is also to be submitted to auction, it is to be viewed as a complete closing down of tho establishment. Throe imported sires in the shape of Quantock. Treelare, and Great Star are included in the Stedmere stud. A Wellington writer states that a number of people were induced to back Ament when ho won the concluding event at Trentham by reason of tho fact that M'Carten .preferred that ride to the, stable representative Ohui. M‘Carton’s judgment proved to be very sound, for whereas Arnent bad the race won a furlong from home, Ohui never really threatened danger. Arpent, like First Acre, is one of the first Acre foals, and they are a good advertisement for their sire. Several members of the Trottine Association were tho guests of tho Forbury Park Club yesterday. They were particularly struck with the great advantage of having the totalisator figures displayed a reasonable distance away from the totalisator os it greatly relieves the congestion usually found in front of the ordinary totalisator. At different times Mr W. F. Dunne’s starting at Forbury Park has not won appreciation, and some of his despatches during yesterday’s racing created some unfavourable comment. Countryman was side on in the Dunedin Cnp Handicap, and seemed to be so some little time before the start was actually made. This not only completely spoilt his own chance, but he also appeared to block the way of those behind him in the handicap. If Loganwood had been promptly ordered to the outside after he had upset the field the situation might have been saved. A starter has power under the rules to place any horse which is misbehaving and likely to prevent a fair start in any position he may think proper, but so ns not to alter the handicap of such horse. With this authority Lognnwood should have been sent to the outside of tho track. A fractious horse on the front line and particularly when near the rails might completely wreck a field, and hence they should not receive the slightest consideration beyond what they arc allowed under the rules. A failure to exercise this authority is distinctly unfair to the rest, of the field. Cardinal Logan was also broadside on some time before the field got away in the King George Handicap. This is a statement of fact beyond dispute, and must be a particularly vexatious point to those whose money made him favourite. The stewards should certainly insist that such a notoriously fractious mare as Lady Embrace must not be allowed to start from anywhere but the extreme outside of the track. In the Flying Handicap she was third from the rails in the front row, and when lined up began rearing and plunging, but still a start was made without, her being sent to the outside. The drivers behind her must have felt at least a trifle anxious whether they could clear as they broke away from the start. She is the same in nearly every race, and should be penalised according to the rules, or preferably be debarred from racing. The fact that several French naval offivors were tho guests of the Forbury Park stewards at, yesterday’s racing should have drawn more pointed attention to the nautical atmosphere of Black Admiral's presence in the field for the Dunedin Oup. The inspiration might have struck a few, but if it did it still left, the ebony occupant of the quarter-deck paying a substantial dividend. Mirella was got by Hal Zoloch from Cinderella, by Franz (a brother to Fritz, the champion trotter of his day) from Cinders by Burlington,' jun.—Cinderella by Vauclce. This is a particularly strong strain to breed a straight-out trotter, and Mirella should bo valuable at tho stud ■ after her racing career is over. Jolly Pet proved to be tho best of the day when stepped out in the Southland Handicap, in which she scored the easiest win of the day. , . , ... Woodlass gave a fine exhibition of the real light-harness gait when she won tho Otago IMP, and seemed to win with something in hand besides her margin at tho post. Money Spider has teen doing some great spinning on the track, but broke his gait badly in the Otago Cup. Silk Thread is a free-lagged pacer from the United States. Tf her legs were united with straps she might not go so well as she does. . , .. „„ Queen’s Own appeared to be a bit unluckv in her run in the Dunedin Cup. She seemed to find a • pocket at a. critical moment or would have otherwise entered tho straight with Black Admiral instead of going about four lengths over tho final furlong. , , Very little light harness racing takes place in Franco, .and there is just a chance that our .gallant naval allies who were at Forbury Park yesterday thought that many of tho horses raced in rigging in honour of their presence. .... Those interested m the arithmetical side of the standing start can amuse themselves by nothing that “left on tho mark’' carried tho following investments, and included Katutc £445 ; Bism, urate, £l6O 10s; Reta, £76 ■ Schoolmate, £194 10s: Countryman, £777 10s; Ouimet, £IBB 10s; Rosothorn, £349 10s; Stockade Jun.. £66 10s: Cardinal Logan, £BBS 10»: Firelight, £600; Ring Boy, £162 10s; Lady Embrace, £195 10s; eta., etc. Credit Slip ran a good race m the Vaux--Iml 1 Handicap until she broke, and this effaced the value of tho rush represented bv tho paper. Black Admiral, the winner of the Dunedin Cup, run at Forbury Park yesterday, was got by Brent Locanda from Queen’s Drive, bv Genera] Pet —Harold’s Rest, by King Harold —Polly, by Robin Hood -Quicksilver mare. The thoroughbred blood at the base of the pedigree no doubt helped to infuse some speed and courage into tho hero of yesterday’s racing. The Nelson Bingen filly Katutc was elected favourite for the Vauxhall Handicap, but she settled her chance at the start, and kept on the mix until the race was practically over. She got balanced in her gait over the last circuit, and as she stepped the last half 'under Irnin 9sec she must have been amongst, tho money if better behaved at the start. A sale of trotting stock and racing equipment will be hold at F-oaburj this ,«roaaa# et •>
