An arrival at Wellington on Thursday last was the British oil tanker Mu rex, from Singapore, via Sydney. Built in 1922 by his Majesty’s Dockyard, Portsmouth, the Murex takes her place in the Shell Company’s fleet of some 200 tankers. The vessel carries the first cargo of bulk motor spirit to New Zealand. The name “Murex” has more than a passing interest to Australasians. Built to the order of the Shell Transport and Trading Company, the original Murex, arriving in Sydney in August, 1914, was despatched after discharge to Rabaul, and brought the first batch of German war prisoners to Sydney for internment. Thence, under sealed orders, the vessel was despatched to Hobart to supply bulk fuel oil to the first convoy of A.I.F. troops oversea. Subsequently in war service she was torpedoed in the Mediterranean. The arrival of the new Murex at Wellington has a special significance, in that it serves to forge a further link in the Shell policy of reducing petrol costs by bulk distribution.
