CANARY ISLANDS
DISASTROUS HURRICANE. HUNDREDS RENDERED HOMELESS. LAS PALMAS SUFFERS. fPrcs. Association—By Telegraph-Copyright) MADRID, January 18. (Received Jan, 19 at 9.55 p.m.) Several persons were seriously injured and ICO rendered homeless as the result of a hurricane breaking over the Canary Islands, according to a message from Las Palmas. A deluge of rain swelled the mountain torrents, and bridges, roads and tramways were swept away and serverai villages destroyed. Banana plantations were devastated, including one which was lately sold for a million pesetas. This was obliterated by the in-coming sea. Las Palmas town is a desolate sight. A number of houses have collapsed, and whole streets have fallen in. Even cemeteries have been wrecked, and coffins have been torn out. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
