The Kawatiri arrived in the lower harbour at noon yesterday from Newcastle. After being granted pratique by the port health officer the vessel was berthed at Port Chalmers to discharge a full cargo of coal. The Opihi, having completed her survey, will come to Dunedin this morning from Port Chalmers. She is timed to sail at noon to-day for Wellington, Nelson, and New Plymouth, via ports. The Storm Is duo at Dunedin this afternoon from Onakaka, via ports, with a full shipment of general cargo and pig iron. Hhe is to sail to-morrow evening for Bluff, and will return about Friday to ioad for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Wanganui. The Gale is due here about Friday from "Wanganui, via ports. After discharge she will undergo annual survey at Port Chalmers. The A. and A. Line’s chartered steamer Merton Hall is to sail to-morrow morning for Hobart and Launceston to discharge the remanider of her general cargo from New York. The Federal Lane steamer Kent, which is completing Homeward loading at Wellington, is scheduled to sail from that port on Thursday for London, via Panama and Curacao. The Wanaka, on arrival at Auckland this week, will be "withdrawn from the East Coast service. She will undergo annual overhaul at the northern port. The Kahika, which has been recommissioned ax Port Chalmers, will come to Dunedin to-day to load general cargo. she is listed to sail this evening for Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne, via ports. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Tongariro left London on January 13, cargo laden, for Auckland and Wellington. The Waipahi is to leave Auckland about January 23 with general cargo for discim-ge at Napier, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The Katoa was to leave Auckland yesterday' with cargo for discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is due nere oh Saturday next. .The Canadian Explorer, which loaded wool and other products at Port Chalmers, Timaru, Wellington, and Auckland, left the latter port or, Saturday afternoon for New York, Boston, and Halifax, via Panama. The Federal Line steaemr Hertford left Wellington on Saturday evening for Gisborne, Napier, and Auckland to complete loading for England. The small steamer Kurnalpi, which was ■ recently purchased for the Auckland-Hoki-anga trade, is expected at Auckland at any time now from Newcastle. The ketch Kara was to sail from Maraetai (Auckland) on Thursday last with a full cargo.of explosives for Wellington, New Plymouth, Westport, and Greymouth. The Waiherao is due at Lyttelton this week from Newcastle with a cargo of coal. After discharge she will go to Vancouver. "The" small schooner Piri is undergoing extensive overhaul at Auckland. She will have a Plenty semi-Diesel 200-h.p. engine installed, and it is expected she will be recommissioned about the end of February. The Kurow left Melbourne at 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday last ior New Plymouth, Castlecliff, Wellington, Auckland, and Portland. The New Zealand Shipping Company have been notified hy cable that the Rimutaka arrived at Sydney on January 13 from Queensland ports to complete loading. The vessel next proceeds via Colombo to Trieste, Genoa, Loudon, Antwerp, Hamburg, and Liverpool. The Federal Line steamer Middlesex was to leave New Plymouth yesterday for Wanganui, Lyttelton, Napier, Auckland, and Wellington' to complete her cargo. She is due at Wellington on February 10, and three days later will be despatched for New’ York, Boston, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Avonmouth, and London. MOERAKI LEAVES MELBOURNE. Cable advice received by the Union Company states that the Moeraki left Melbourne at 10 a.m. on Saturday for Milford •Sound, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is bringing passengers, mails, and cargo, and is due at Wellington on Friday. The vessel should arrive here on January 26, and is scheduled to sail the same day for Melbourne, via Bluff. ; CAMBRIDGE FROM LIVERPOOL. The Federal Line agency advises that the Cambridge, which arrived at Auckland on Wednesday last from Liverpool, is expected to leave the northern port about the middle of this week for Wellington. She will later visit Lyttelton and Dunedin to complete discharge. MARTABAN FROM NEW YORK. Messrs J. W. Swift and Co. advises that the C. and D. Lise’s chartered steamer Martaban is due at Dunedin, on Thursday from New York, via northern ports to discharge a large quantity of general American merchandise, including case oil. NORFOLK TO LEAVE NAPIER. The Federal Company advises that the Norfolk, at present discharging at Napier, will leave there to-morrow for Wellington in continuation of her voyage from Liverpool. The vessel will subsequently visit Lyttelton and Duned'.n to complete discharge. PORT MELBOURNE TO LOAD. Messrs J. W. Swift and Co. advises that the Ct. and D. Line steamer Port Melbourne, which has been idle at Port Chalmers since January 2, will commence loading produce to-morrow for London. She will sail about Thursday for Bluff, thence northern ports, for luriher loading. SUSSEX FROM EASTERN PORTS. The Union Company advises that the steamer Sussex is to leave Lyttelton to-day for Timaru, Dunedin, and Bluff to discharge the remainder of her Eastern cargo from Calcutta, Singapore, and Samarang. The vessel is expected at this port on Friday. TEKOA LEAVES CURACAO. Cable advice has been received by the New Zealand Shipping Company that the Tekoa arrived at Curacao on January 11 from Wellington, and sailed on January 12 for London. The vessel left AYellington on December 19. THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL. The R.M.S. Makura arrival at Wellington early yesterday morning from San Francisco, via Papeete and Rarotonga, with passengers, mails, general American cargo, and fruit from Hie islands. She was expected to sail last evening for Sydney, where she is due on Friday. CARGO FROM LIVERPOOL. The Federal Company announces that the Cumberland is to sail from Liverpool on January 30 with general cargo- to discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. THE CITY OF NORWICH. Cable advice received by the local agents for the A. and A. Line states that the steamer City of Norwich left New York on January 10 with general American cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttel--lon, Timaru, Dunedin, and Newcastle. She is due at Auckland about February 13, and at Dunedin about February 28. WILLASTON FROM SAN FRANCISCO The Union Company advises that the Willaston arrived at Napier on Sunday from San Francisco. After part discharge_ at Napier the Willaston proceeds to ’Welling ton, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and New Plymouth to complete unloading. She is due here about January 28. TNRAKINA TO LEAVE LONDON. The New Zealand Shipping Company ad vises that the Turakina is to leave London to-morrow with general cargo for discharge at Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, and Napier. OTAKI LEAVES COLON. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received cable news that the Otaki arrived at Panama on January 11, from Wellington, and left Colon the same date for London and West Coast ports of Great Britain. The vessel sailed from Wellington on December 19. LEITRIM CLEARED NORFOLK. The Federal Line’s chartered steamer Leitrim, which sailed from Gisborne on December 11 for New York. Boston, and Liverpool, cleared Norfolk, Virginia, on January 11. DANGER TO NAVIGATION. The Marine Department advises that the carcase of a large whale was sighted in latitude 43 degrees S, longitude 173.22 J E, at 10.45 a.m. on Friday last. The carcase is a danger to navigation, and shipmaster# are warned to keep a sharp lookout. OBSTRUCTION TO SHIPPING. The secretary, General Post Office, advises that the following portion of a message, broadcasted from Sydney Radio at 10.11 p.m, on January 13, was received at Radio, Auckland; —“Framework about 30ft or 30ft long in latitude 29 degrees 10 minutes south, 153" degrees 40 minutes east, standing about Sft out of water, and evidently weighty at bottom; dangerous to navigation.” The beginning of the message was not received owing to bad atmospheric conditions. An interesting arrival at Wellington on Thmsday last was tho Union Company’s new collier and general cargo steamer Kaponga, which brought coal from Newcastle. The Kaponga left Newcastle at 10 p.m. on January S. Captain R. W. Dickinson is in command of the vessel. The Kaponga was built by Messrs William Gray and Co. (Ltd.), West Hartlepool, for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand (Ltd.). She is built on the top-side cantilever frame system, and has length overall 292 ft 6in, breadth 44ft 3in, depth 21ft Ijin, with poop bridge, winch decks, and forecastle, and is eelff imming. The double bottom top-side tanks and large after and fore peaks are constructed for the carriage of water ballast. Ten steam winches and a warping winch aft, 10 steel derricks, and six coaling gaffs for the quick handling of cargo; steam steering gear direct on the rudder, with telomotor control on the bridge; steam windlass, stockless anchors; fore and aft rig; lifeboats carried on Welin davits, and steel hatch-covers to the main hatchways of the Hogg-Cair patent corrugated type are fitted. Electric lighting is fitted throughout. The machinery, which is fitted aft, has been suplied by the Central Marino Engine Works of the builders, and consists of tripleexpansion engines having cylinders 20J, 331, and 55 by 29in stroke, and two multitubular boilers with a steam pressure of 1901 b. She was launched on August 19, and proceeded to Sydney, via Montreal. PERSONAL ITEMS. Captain S. A. Chatfield, of the Wsinm, has been granted holiday leave, and Captain C. A. Grey is now in command of the vessel. Captain H. S. Whyborn has been granted holiday leave. Captain E. M. Kane has been appointed master of the Waipahi relieving Captain C. Elders for instructions. Mr W. H. C. Millward has been appointed second officer of the Kaitangata, relieving Mr W. A. M’Garry for holiday leave. Mr R. N. Turner has been appointed second officer of the Kekerangu, relieving Mr C. H. George for holidays. Mr E. C. K. Meatyard has been appointed tbird officer of the Manuka. Mr J. Delay is second officer of the Manuka. Mr N. J. M'Murrich, chief engineer of the Waitomo, has joined tho Kaimanawa in a similar capacity, vice Mr H. Swann, who is on holiday leave. Captain A. P.
