CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
MANUFACTURING CHEMISTS’ EMPLOYEES. Mr W. H Hagger had before him at yesterday’s sitting of the Council of Conciliation a dispute that had arisen between the Dunedin Manufacturing Chemists’ Union and firms carrying on business in Dunedin. _ The union was represented by Messrs T. Grant, A. E. Burden, and H. Kendall, and the employers by Messrs C. Baker. J. G. Neil, James Stark, and A. S. Cookson (agent). The wages asked for by the union were : £6 per week for laboratory assistants (qauiGed), £5 for laboratory assistants (unqualified)’ £5 for the man in charge oi the pill room, and for all others £4 12s per week. For female workers the following rates were claimed First six months, £1 5s per week; second six months, £1 7s fid ; second year, £1 12s fid; third year, £1 17s fid; fourth year, £2 2s fid; and thereafter £2 7s fid. The union claimed a week’s work of 44 hours. The wages asked for youths were £1 17s fid; between 17 and 18 years, £2 2s fid; between 18 and 19, £2 7s 6d; between 19 and 20, £3; between 20 and 21 years and thereafter, the minimum rate; the proportion of youths not to exceed one to every four adult workers, fully employed. Workers receiving a higher wage than those proscribed were' not to->, have their wages reduced. In addition to the recognised holidays (seven in number) the union asked for two weeks’ holiday on full pay (at the termination of 12 months’ service), or, pro rata —after six months’ service—should the service be terminate!; double time to be paid for work done during holidays. The award was to operate throughout Otago. A complete agreement was come to. The present hours were agreed to, and wages were fixed as follows: —Qualified assistants, £5 11s fid per week, unqualified £4 8s; man in charge of the pill room—qualified £5 11s fid, unqualified £4 8s; all other adult workers, £4. Female workers: First six months, 17s fid per week; second six months. £1 Is; second year, £1 6s; third year, £1 13s fid; fourth year, £1 19s fid; thereafter, £2 ss. Youths; First six months, £1 2s; second six months, £1 4s fid: second year, £1 9s fid; third year, £1 17s; fourth year £2 7s; and fifth year, £3 Is fid. The proportion of youths agreed to was one youth to three adults. The overtime claim was agreed to. otherwise the clauses in the old award were accepted. Trie scope of the award will cover Otago and Southland, and the award will come into operation on the 21st inst., and continue in existence for one year.
