OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was commenced yesterday, and was attended by Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), G. Livingstone, J. Smith, G. W. Wood, R. H. Todd, J. H. Wilkinson, L. Sanderson, and the Hon. D.. T. Fleralng‘ APPLICATIONS AGREED TO. The following applications were agreed toAllanton.—Half-cost of clearing gorse on road line. Bannockburn—TKe Water Race Company intimathd that the annual charge for water had been fixed at £3. • The following applications, recommended by the Architect, were agreed to: —Maungatua: Committee’s application for repairing of the school desks or supply of new ones. —Maori Hill; • Committee’s application for repair of Venetian blinds of school.— Sawyers’ Bay: Head master’s application for repair of paths and yard at residence. ARCHITECT TO REPORT. The following matters were referred to the architect to act or report upon:— Awamoko: The, committee protested against the proposal to. introduce the pit system of latrines at the school.—Forbury: The committee asked that the old infant department rooms be repaired, painted, and renovated in time for the reopening of the school after the Christmas vacation.—Highcliff : The Head Master applied for conveniences for the house.—Momington: The committee asked for repairs to the school.— Ngapara: The Head Master asked for repairs to the .residence.—Wairuna; The committee applied for a now door to the school porch.—Waitapeka: The committee applied for lavatories for the school.—The Educational Institute applied for alterations and improvements to a room in the arts and crafts building. ■ GENERAL. Airedale made representations as to the insufficiency of the school accommodation. There were 32 pupils on the roll.—Referred to the chairman The Balclutha Borough Council forwarded a claim for £42, half-cost of channelling along the front of the school property.— Referred to the chairman and secretary. A communication was received from the Inch Valley Committee that it had been notified by the Telegraph Department to have trees on the road line cut or removed, and the committee asked for halfcost, estimated at £ll.—Chairman to act. The Educational Institute wrote expressing its thanks to the board for the permission given the institute to occupy one of the rooms of tile arts and crafts building as a library and club room and agreed to the board’s terms. —Received. Miller’s Flat Committee applied for half cost of petrol for the school children’s trip to Dunedin at the time of the American fleet’s visit. The sum involved was 22s 6d. —Declined, It was agreed to put three lights into the Cromwell School; an application of a similar kind from Upper Junction was refused. Mrs T. Grant applied for the establishment of a household school at Clifton, six miles from Waiwera. She had three children of school age, and she stated that there were altogether 15 children of school age in the vicinity. One child was 10 years oh age, and had never been to school.—Chairman and the senior inspector to visit the place. The Inspector was instructed to report as to an application for - a household school at Mount Stoker. The applicant (Mr J. M. Waters) was Hi miles from Middlemarch, and had three children to educate. The Education Deparment wrote intimating that the building maintenance grant for the year ending March 31 next would be £13,590; (£IBO less than for the previous year).—Received, the Chairman observing that they had to bo thankful for small 'mercies. The department intimated that authority bad been given for the acceptance of Mr Lovie’s tender of £4284 for the first portion of a now High School at Balclutha.— Received. The following further communications were received from the Education Department; —Ranfurly: A grant has been sanctioned for the erection of two rooms on the new site, the board to contribute £250 of the cost out of its Rebuilding Fund.— Oamaru South: Further remodelling and provision of teachers’ room. The department has sanctioned a grant for this work, the board to contribute £IOO towards the cost from its Rebuilding Fund.—Conical Hills: A special grant has been sanctioned for enlargement of this school.—All these communications were received. The department wrote with regard to Otakou that the board’s application for a new school had been declined, but if the board would forward an amended application for improving the present building and levelling the galleries, painting interior, the department would bo prepared to sanction a grant of half cost, the balance to be contributed from the Rebuilding Fund.— The department to bo approached and informed that the board considered a new school should be built, but was prepared to meet the department. The architect was instructed to renort in the matter. An application from Roxburgh for a special carriage service from Miller’s Flat and Ettrick to Roxburgh for secondary pupils was held over. Beaumont wrote asking the board to consider the desirability of having children now attending Raes Junction school being conveyed to Beaumont. —The Raes Junction Committee to be consulted. In connection with applications from Springvale asking the board to consider conveying the Springvale children to Alexandra by motor, it was stated that it was six niiles from Alexandra and 2 i< to Galloway.— It was decided to ask, the Galloway Committee for an expression of opinion as , to driving Galloway children to Alexandra. A number of applications to lease glebes, residences, and schools; the latter dupng Christmas, were dealt with.
