An illuminating discussion on how fashions change tor commercial purposes arose during a lawsuit heard before Mr Justice MacCardie, who is a bachelor. The claim was for dresses supplied. His Honor asked why dresses in 1924 were straight and narrow. Counsel: Fashion altera. In some years skirts arc loose, and in some years they are tight. Dressmakers would not do any business if they' did not alter the styles. His Honor: Then the object of the fashions is to promote turnover, health being a secondary consideration. Tell mo who determines what the fashions will bo. Counsel: The designers and dressmakers try to alter the styles every season to induce women to leave off their old clothes and buy new dresses. Prosecuting Counsel: It would be very interesting to attend a meeting of tho conspirators.
