OBITUARY.

MR THOMAS MacGIBBON. The death occurred suddenly yesterday of Mr 'Thomas Mac Gibbon at the ago of 36 years. . Mr Mac Gibbon was born in Glasgow in 1339, and came out to New Zealand 10 years later. He carried on a general storekeeping business for a great many years at Mataura, and this business is still being carried on under the name of John MacGibbon and Tons. Tho late Mr Mac Gibbon took an active part in public affairs in Southland. He was a member of tho now defunct body of Otagc School Gommissi oners and also of the Southland Education Board, filling tho office of chairman for some time. He was also a member of tho Mataura Borough Council. He contested the Mataura seat for tho House of Representatives against the late Dr M’Nab in tho Reform interest in 1905, and was defeated by only 435 votes. Ho removed to Dunedin a few years later and was appointed by tho Southland Education Board to represent it on tho University Council of Otago. Mr Mac Gibbon was called to tho Legislative Council in 1914, and served for seven years. Ho was a Haunch Presbyterian in religion, and was an older of Knox Church. His wife predeceased him by a few years, and ho leaves a grown-up family o[ sons and daughters. His sons are—Dr Mac Gibbon (of Christchurch), Mr R. Mac Gibbon (resident engineer of the Lake Coleridge electric scheme), and Mr A. W. Mac Gibbon (of Mataura, now managing the business originated by his father). The daughters are—Mrs Robson, Mrs Carswell, and Miss Mac Gibbon (of Dunedin), Mrs Stenhouse (of St. Clair), Mrs Copland (of Invercargill), and Mrs Penny (of Christchurch).
