Sib, —My attention has been drawn to articles which have appeared in your journal in December and January last regarding the marketing of New Zealand products in this country. I desire to draw your attention to the attractive features which Cardiff .possesses as a port and market centre for the distribution of the food products of New Zealand. , Not only is Cardiff nearer to New Zealand than any English port, but it serves one of the most densely-ppoulated areas in the Old Country, for within a radius of 100 miles we have a population of over 10 millions, who rely largely on foodstuffs from overseas for their bustenanoo. At tli© moment the bulk of New Zealand products shipped to this country are discharged at the port of London with the result that the cost of handling and transport from the ship’s side in London to Cardiff, which Is substantial, has to be passed on to the price of the article to the consumer, thus placing the New Zealand product in an unfavourable position when competing . with similar articles of food raised nearer to the area of consumption. In the case of highly perishable articles the condition deteriorates, and consequently they do not realise such a good price. By the direct importation to Cardiff of such New Zealand products these extra charges are entirely eliminated ; and, further, the good condition of perishable ,r o ods is maintained. You will therefore readilv realise that direct shipment to Cardiff operates in favour of the producer, exporter, and consumer, because it carries the product from the producer to the consumer by the most direct and economical means, and thus should materially benefit both parties. The area controlled by Cardiff as an economical distributing centre is a large consumer of New Zealand meat, fruit, farm and dairy produce of all kinds.—l am, etc., T. W. D. S-HITH. City Hall, Cardiff, June 24.
