(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 5. During a dense fog the ferry steamer Albatross collided with and sank the scow Scott. Two men who were aboard tho latter were picked up by the steamer. _ Fire completely destroyed a sixi oomed residence at Avondale, Mr and Airs Peterson and their family of four escaping in their night clothes. The house was owned by Mrs Lyons and insured, but tho amount is unknown. Peterson has £350 on his furniture. CHRISTCHURCH. August 5. The deadlock continues at Lyttelton over the unloading of phosphates and .guano from tho vessels Pearlmoor and Pemnorvah. A deputation from the Addington branch, of the A.S.R.S. waited on tho Progress League to protest against the Governments intention to transfer the boiler, blacksmith, moulding, and fitting departments to Hillside. It was stated that 600 men were affected, and only one man, a foreman, was in favour of being transferred. It was contended that the proposal would inflict great hardship on many men. and the Government had made no provision for housing.. The league decided to ascertain the Government’s side of the question before taking the matter up.
