THE SHIPPING DISPUTE

FIXING DATE OF RESUMPTION. PROBLEM OF VOLUNTEER LABOUR. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, Augustus. Another meeting of the Seamen’s Union will be held this morning to fix the date of the resumption of work. _ The point now occupying the attention is the position of the volunteer labour engaged during the strike to man the vessels and to handle the cargo ashore. It is likely that these men may have to be dispensed with in order that the seamen and waterside workers may offer for engagement. The Newcastle and Hunter River Company has employed volunteer labour since the beginning of the year. RESUMPTION ON FRIDAY MORNING. SYDNEY, August 5. (Received August 5, at 10 p.m.) A mass meeting of the Seamen's Union decided to resume work on Friday morning. AGREEMENT UNANIMOUSLY ACCEPTED. MELBOURNE, August 5. The shipping agreement has now been accepted by all the branches of the teamen’s Union. Probably the seamen will offer their services in a body on inursdav afternoon. . , , ~ The union officials denied the truth of the message from Fremantle to the effect that the branch accepted the agreement with the exception of one clause.

A message received yesterday stated that in Fremantle the agreement was adopted with the exception ot one clause relating to engagements, which was referred back to the ship owners, through the union’s Committee of Management.
