TROUBLE ON WATERFRONT.
DISCHARGE OF PHOSPHATES HIGHER RATE DEMANDED. (Pee United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 4. On a call being made for labour at Lyttelton this morning, to discharge the Penmorvah’s cargo of guano, there was ne response. The men demanded 3s id an hour, and in addition a 15s bonus for deterioration of their clothes. The Disputes Committee met and discussed the question for an hour, during which the employers’ representative offered 2s lod, which" is the rate fixed by the National Disputes Committee at Wellington lor the discharge of Walpole Island phosphates and basic slag. , , The Pcarlmoor ease was further discussed, but the employers’ representatives were informed that the men still adhered to their demand for 3s an hour. As the employers will not, pay more than the award rate of 2s there is a deadlock. and both the Pearlmoor and Penmorvah are idle.
