RELIGIOUS EXERCISES IN SCHOOLS BILL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —'Will you oblige by informing me what are the chief proposals in Mr Isitfs Bible-in-Schools Bill? Does it provide for: U) The Bible to be read in schools, or is some kind of scripture manual to be used? (2) By whom is instruction to be given,—by the regular school staff or visiting ministers? (3) Is there provided an exemption clause for conscientious objectors?—l am, etc., Enquires. Middlemarch, August 4. [(1) The Bill provides that a period of 15 to 20 minutes shall be allotted daily at the opening of every public school, Native school, secondary school, and technical high school, for the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer, the singing or recitation of a hymn from a hymnal to be compiled by the Education Department after consultation with the representatives of the Christian churches, and the reading of a Bible lesson from a manual compiled similarly to the hymnal. (2) The Bill provides that the Scripture reading shall be by the teacher or pupils. (3) The Bill contains a conscience clause for teachers and pupils.— Ed. O.D.TJ
