CHINESE SITUATION
SHANGHAI GENERAL STRIKE. FURTHER HOSTILITIES FEARED. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, August 4. (Received August 4, at 8.10 p.m.) A lengthy despatch from Shanghai published in the Daily Express states that the general strike continues, and the operations of British manufacturers are practically at a standstill. Tho student agitators are most active everywhere, and the Chinese newspapers are publishing lists of banned British articles. The foreign settlement remains calm, though a renewal of hostilities is feared. The. local leaders of British commerce stress the urgent need for a settlement of the outstanding issues.—A, and N.Z. Cable. GREGORENKO DISCHARGED. BRIBERY EVIDENCE INSUFFICIENT. PEKING, August 3. The charge against Gregorenko was dismissed, the Assessor stating that the court was satisfied that a prima facie ease had been established against another person, and that an attempt at bribery had been made; but there was not sufficient evidence against the accused. —•Reuter. The police arrested a Rumanian named Alexander Gregorenko on a charge of alleged attempted bribery in connection with the Dosser case.
