A message, from Williamstown states that, defining the British Commonwealth as a “loose confederacy bound by ties of common sentiment, common institutions, and common interests,” Professor T. A. Smiddy, Minister for the Irish Free State at Washington, told the of Politics that, “should Great Britain attempt an Imperialistic policy, it would undoubtedly he restrained by the selfgoverning dominions ” “The necessity for co-opcration among the various units oi the Empire,” he said, “is one guarantee against Britain’s entering impetuously upon any course leading to with a foreign country.” —A. and N.Z. oable. Mr Timothy A. Smiddy, who is a Professor of Economics, was, prior to his present appointment, warden of Hanan Hostel, and Dean of the Faculty of Commerce at the University College, Cork. He is 48 years of age. He is an M.A. of the Royal University of Ireland and Ho holds many scholastic distinctions, took honours in mental and moral science. He was Envoy Extraordinary from the Daii to the United Stales in 1922. He has written several works on economic and educational subjects. In America, Mr Smiddv represents the Free State m all matters directly concerning that portion of Ireland and on other matters he consults the British Ambassador, Sir Esme Howard.
