At the annual meeting of the Victoria Racing Club the committee was adversely criticised over improvements in the shape of increased accommodation at the Flemington racecourse. The report showed that these cost £284,0CX), of which £141,000 was expended on a stand. The club’s reserve and contingency funds had been exhausted, and there were still many improvements to be made; consequently, it had been decided to increase members’ subscriptions from six guineas to nine and to raise the entrance fee from 30 guineas to 40 guineas. Amongst the complaints voiced by the members were the following: That the improvements prevented them from seeing the finish of the races, and that the committee had ineffectively spent a lot of money and had made a muddle of the work. In reply, the Chairman stated that the plans included the removal of the winning post, but that could not bo carried out at present. The meeting granted the widow of the late secret arv (Mr Bryan Moore) an annnnity of £IOOO for the first year and £SOO thereafter. AUSTRALIAN STEEPLECHASE. The conditions were very unpleasant during training hours at Riccarton this morning. Light drizzling showers fell early, and shortly after 8 o’clock a thick fog descended on the course. As a result it was often difficult to distinguish the horses, and timing gallops was impossible. Apart from this, the work was not specially interesting, many of the horses who raced on Saturday being let oil with easy tasks. Kilfane. who was the first out, was given a half-mile sprint. Deucalion jumped off at the five-furlong post and came home at nearly top speed. Tiff was going better than fi'ootfall and Starmist. at the end of six furlongs. Sun Up was given a sprint by himself. Rich Prize and Serclina were companions over half a mile, while Barn Owl ran five furlongs. Tuki beat San Forte over nine furlongs. Red Kriss had Miss durance as a mate in a six-furlong spin. Ayrovski rattled up the back in a short sprint. Tarleton and Last Dart were sprinted in company. Passin’ Through did a working gallop once round. Clareina accompanied Rod Wink in useful work. Laugbic ran down from the half-milo mark. Goldfown was given useful work by himself. Moorland ran seven furlongs, going an even pace throughout. Tcnteificld and Vagabond were associated in a working gallop over a mile, while Charlatan covered a mile by himself. Bouglilcen Dhoun and Operatic were given a sprint together. Boomerday (W. Rennie) set out for a school by himself over eight hurdles. He went_a_t a fair pace, but his jumping was not specially attractive, though ho got over quite safely till he reached the seventh flight, where he fell. On being remounted' he jumped the eighth hurdle really well. Apart from the fall, it was just a fair effort. Lava was given a sprint by herself. Mainspring (O. Cullum) and Sporting Girl (A. E. Ellis) gave a satisfactory showing over four hurdles, going round at about the same pace as Boomerday. To Kawa and Captain Sarto were together at the end of a mile. Eerie was restricted to easy pace work. Killocra did strong pace work on the sand. Horatius and Kigel were companions in a sprint, and Knocklyn and Chickwheat ran down the straight together. Fresco and Kilbirnie were associated in a sprinting task. Maghera and Uncle Boh went once round the sand, and then ran a mile and a-quartcr on the grass. Sir Roseberry (A. M’Donald), Frenchman (P. M'Brearty), and Cassells (A. E. Ellis) attracted a lot of attention when they came out for a school over a round of the steeplechase fences on the course proper. They started off at the sod-wall, the southern pair being in the lead, but on reaching the other sod-wall near the five-furlong post, Sir Roeeherry commenced to move up, and he finished" over Cutts’s fence alongside Cassells, with Frenchman a few lengths away. The thick fog obscured the view at several of the fences, but so far as could be seen, all three horses jumped well. The performance of Sir Roseberry will bring him back to favour for the Grand National. A large number of other horses were out, getting through useful tasks, some on the grass and others on the sand.
