The city's unenviable crime list has been swelled by two cases of infanticide within a few weeks. The bodies of two infants have been found, their deaths being due to tapes tightly tied round their necks. A JAPANESE INQUIRER. SYDNEY, July 14. Professor Takauuki, who is attached to several universities in Japan, has arrived in Sydney on a mission from the Japanese Home Office to study social, labour, and charitable systems and organisations. After spending about six weeks in Australia he will proceed to New Zealand. RECORD SUPPLY OF TELEPHONES. MELBOURNE, July 14. The Postmaster-General (Mr W. G. Gibson) states that during the financial year ended June 50 last 58,129 subscribers were supplied with telephones. This number was by far the greatest ever supplied by the commonwealth in one year. The number of services outstanding then was 8621. LISTENING-IN FEES REDUCED. MELBOURNE, July 14. The Postmaster-General announces that from August 1 wireless listening-in fees will be' reduced to 27s 6d annually or 15s half-yearly. TASMANIAN HOP GROWERS. MELBOURNE, July i 4. The result of the inquiry into the fa* manian hop industry shows that the Federal Government is making £24,576 available to assist growers. it is -.1150 taking steps to induce brewers to reduce their imports in favour of locally grown hops. NORTH GB?FSLAND FLOODS. MELBOURNE, July 14. (Received July 14, at 10 p.m.) The floods in North Gippsland are subsiding. The damage to crops was not heavy as most of the maize was harvested before the rain commenced. The missing fishermen are safe, lliey are sheltering in Eden Bay. LIQUOR WITH MEALS. SYDNEY, July 14. (Received July 14, at 10.40 p.m.) In a case in which a hotel-keeper was charged with selling liquor with dinner after 6 o'clock, the magistrate dismissed the information, deciding that drinks might be served with meals after closing time.
