BARLEY FOR BEAUTY.

A rough, rod skin cannot be turned into a smooth, white one in a few days. It may need a few weeks, but the time and trouble are worth While. A ■ simple method to achieve suqh a result is the application of barley paste. It is said that the ladies in ancient Romo used this paste as a skin beautilier. Barley was well known to the ancients as a very soothing remedy. Hippocrates, the old Green physician, known as the father of medicine, was a groat advocate of barley .water as a drink for the sick—it was “soothing.” It is certainly a “skin soother,” for there is no better remedy for chafing of the skin in babes and young children than bathing with thick barley water. Hero is the recipe for making barley paste : Ground barley, 3oz; honey, loz; one white of egg. . The egg white must bo whisked and too ingredients made into a paste by mixing them thoroughly. For a red, rough forehead put the paste rather thickly on a piece of butter muslin, and, having laid this smoothly on the forehead at bedtime, bandage on so that it will remain in place all night. ■ The same treatment must be used for a rough neck. . For the hands the best plan is to wash them first with eoati and hot water, apply the paste thinly, and then draw over a pair of loose-fitting gloves. Old white cotton or fabric gloves will do, if quite clean, but, of course, chamois leather ones axe the best. The gloves should be kept on all night. In the morning the paste must be removed by battling with warm water. If the treatment is used nightly until improvement is noted it will then only be necessary to apply the paste once or twice a week, and gradually lees often.
