SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION,
INSTITUTE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION. ADDRESS BT THE REV. KNOWEES KEMPTON. A course of study under the auspices of the Institute of Religious Education which is closely connected with the Sunday School Union was commenced last evening in Hanover Street Baptist Church, and was well attended. The course 1s to he continued during the next three evenings. Mr James Farquharson presided, and, in opening the proceedings, mentioned that it was four years since the institute had been formed in Hanover Street Baptist Church. He welcome 1 all those present. The greater part of the evening was occupied in listening to an address by the Rev. It. H. Knowles Kcmpton on “The Life of Christ.” In opening the address, which was very lengthy, the rev. gentleman said that Gospel writers did not profess to give a biography of Jesus Christ. What the writers had done was to give a fourfold portrait of Christ. They had enabled us to see His glory; they had given us glimpses of His very heart; they had compelled from us the admission that no man spoke like Him; they had described for us works such ns no other had done among men; and all this that we might believe that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God. and that believing we might have life in His,name. In glancing afresh at that wonderful Life that was the Light of men, ho would not attempt to deal with more than a few of the outstanding incidents set forth in the Gospels. To attempt to do more would bo useless, and was quite unnecessary, for one was safe in assuming, on the part of all present, a comprehensive and intimate knowledge of the Life of Christ. What he would endeavour to do was to show that the words and works of Christ formed a great unity, and his purpose would bo served by pointing out the Inwardness of some of the great events. There would bo four way-marks in the journeythe "Farewell to Nazareth,” the "Farewell to Galilee,” and the “Tender Last Farewell of the Upper Room.” Proceeding on these lines, the Rev. Mr Kempton held the close attention of his audience for fully an hour. DEVOTIONAL MEETING. A devotional meeting was then held, which lasted for about half an hour, and at which the Scriptures wore read by the Rev. Mr Kempton and the meeting was led in prayer by Messrs Jas. Farquharson, R. Blair, and S. G. Macfarlane, the proceedings terminating with the Benediction, pronounced by tbe Rev. Mr Kempton. SECTIONAL MEETINGS.
