HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE.
The performance of Mr Maurice Muscovitch at His Majesty’s Theatre on Friday and Saturday nights was given an enhanced attraction by reason of tho opportunity afforded of determining the capabilities of handling two roles calling for such widely sundered methods as Ragatzv and Shylock. A greater diversity of character could scaicely be wished for. The two are dissimilar in every point. Muscovitch possesses the ability, to a remarkable degree, to sink his own personality in that of the character that he is enacting. While he is presenting either character there is no Muscovitch. His performance throughout is vivid character sketching iff which by masterly strokes he delineates the salient points in striking facile lines. Miss Jean Robertson made an excellent Portia, and her work in the court, scene added to the laurels which her earlier efforts had won for her in Dunedin. Mr William Slack, in the role of Bassanio, handled that part with an understanding that emphasised tho excellence of his work. Miss Eileen Sparks proved by her representaton of Nerissa, that she is a versatile and gifted actress. Mr Arthur Greenaway, as Antonio, painted a fine picture of the varying fortunes of that melancholy young man. Tho play is excellently mounted and some of tho lighting effects have been very adroitly arranged.
