“GONE TO THE PACK.”
A MATRIMONIAL MISFIT. Failure to comply with a maintenance order calling for £1 10s per week led to Edith Mary Reid proceeding against her husband, Francis Henderson Reid, at the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton the other day, before Mr H. A. Young, S.M. Respondent said ho had been in bad health, and also had lost- work through bad weather. He was also subject to bilious attacks, and was at present suffering with an injured finger. The woman complained that her husband went to the pictures several times a week. She was in desperate circumstances, and one of her daughters was seriously ill. His Worship (to respondent) How did you come to get married? Was it not because Mis Reid wanted somebody to look after her children ? Complainant: He goes to the pictures several times a week, and I suppose he buys chocolates each time. His Worship (to respondent): I seem to have some recollection of this case. Was it not at the pictures you met your wife?— Yes. • His Worship; I understand you never went to pictures till your wife took you there?—No. Complainant, in a further outburst, said her husband had “gone to the pack” in the last three years. His Worship; You did not seem to improve him much. Complainant added that her husband sometimes ate a shilling box of chocolates before breakfast. No wonder he suffered from bilousness. She added that ho had suggested asking the approval of the magistrate to his returning to her, but he thought, his father might object. His Worship; Xo fear of the magistrate approving. Respondent was ordered to pay 2s 6d per week of the arrears of £6 ss, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. His Worship told respondent that if he found he could not pay to again place the matter before the court.
