EARTHQUAKE INCIDENTS
JEWELS IN WRECKAGE. 'SANTA BARBARA, July 1. In the wreck of one room of the Arlington Hotel, destroyed by the earthquake, has been found a trunk containing jewels worth £30,000, which lay neglected for two days within a few feet of where the owner, Mrs Perkins, the widow of a former railway president, met her death. All the western cities are rallying to the stricken town’s assistance, San Francisco leading the list with £IO,OOO. Neither fire, pestilence nor looting followed this ’quake. Insurance adjusters appraise the losses at £6,000,000.
