DR BARNARDO’S HOMES.

A FAMILY EQUALLING A TOWN. We have received the following from the heard offices of Dr Barnardo’s Homes, Stepney causeway, London:— , “Imagine a family which requires 1000 gallons of milk per day! “You mothers and yon darners of socks and stockings what think you of 14,600 holes to be darned every week, and 7300 pairs of boots to be mended frequently, and all too frequently if the children arc healthy and full of vigour as children should be. “This family would till 18 churches, each seating 400. “Thirty-six trains, carrying 300 in each, would be required to transport this family. “The family to which we refer is the Barnardo family, consisting of 7300 children, and to realise its size you must think of a. town of 1460 houses with the average family of five in each. “Seven thousand three hundred is a fairsized town. It is more than double the population of the borough town of Buckingham, in England, and of the ancient Borough of Cardigan in Wales, and is double the population of Dunbar in Scotland. It equals the population of the cathedra] cities of Ely in England, , and Armagh in Ireland. It about equals Fremantle (cast and north) in Australia; Pembroke, in Ontario, Canada; Grahamstown (European) in South Africa; the British population in Hongkong; and it almost equals the town of Nelson in New Zealand. “Imagine running a town of 7300! Imagine feeding a town of that size! “Dr Barnardo's Homes are making their annual appeal for half-crowns to feed their big family. They appeal for birthday gifts in memory of the founder, the late Dr Barnardo, the man with the great heart w'-o loved little children. Last year 444,146 halfcrowns wore sent in by 67,361 generous friends aR over the world, and we arc asked to make the needs of this family known to all lovers of little children. “Cheques, bankers’ darfts, orders, and postal notes should be made payable to Dr Barnardo’s Homes Founder's Day Fund, and addressed to Dr Barnardo’s Homes, 18-26 Stepney causeway, London, E. 1.”
