HERIOT POULTRY AND PRODUCE CLUB.

FOURTH ANNUAL SHOW. The fourth annual show of the Hcriot Poultry and Produce Club was held on Thursday last, in tine though cold weather. Entries in the various sections were not up to previous years in respect to numbers, but the quality was good throughout. In the poultry section the strongest class was Black Minorca (utility), which the judge described as a very creditable lot, the first prize pullet being the pick of the bunch. The winning hen was also good, and although aged showed utility points. In Minorcas (utility) the first prize pullet wae the best bird •shown, with a hen as runner-up. The winning cockerel was of nice type, being good in comb, leg, face, eye, and colour. The Andalusian ben that gained the South Island championship was a splendid bird. This once popular breed is dying out, and those penned at Heriot were the best the judge had seen for some time. In the open class the champion pullet (exhibited by Mr J. Landels) was a fairly good bird, .but the class as a whole was a disappointing one, the winning hen having a broken face, and cocks and cockerels were not up to standard. There was nothing outstanding in Brown Leghorns, but the Biack Orpingtons shown were creditable types of utility birds, the winning cockerel pleasing the judge, being o ! good size, nice sheen, good dark eyes, and red ear lobes, the only fault being a little off in condition. The winning pullet was of nice type, although on the small side and wanting in condition. Mr Geo, Kerr (Gore) judged this section. There was a fair display in the grain section, but turnips and vegetables were not what might have been expected. Heriot School again won the shield, with a most creditable collection. Potatoes made a good show, Mr J. Pullar pretty well having a monopoly of the red tickets. Dairy produce made an attractive display, and the quality throughout was all that could be desired. There was some good work in the school section, with excellent competition in penmanship. The show was well conducted, under the superintendence of Mr H. ,King (president), and Mr A. Roberts made u most capable secretary, receiving valuable assistance from Mr R. G. Foster and a good working committee. Lady members of the club assisted at the tables, and also conducted the tealooms, which were well patronised. Appended is the detailed prize-list: POULTRY.
