MOROCCAN CAMPAIGN
NOT A MINOR OPERATION. COMMENT BY THE TIMES. Press 'Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 9. The Times, in a loading article, slates: “General Naulin’a Moroccan appointment is an indication to the world that the campaign against the Rilfs is not a minor, colonial expedition, but a war on a considerable scale, it took France 40 years to subdue Algeria. She is apparently ready to devote as much time and energy as may be necessary to pacify and protect the whole of that part of Morocco for which she is responsible.”—The Times. FRENCH CREDIT VOTED. IMPORTANT VICTORY FORESHADOWED. PARIS, July 10. (Received July 10,. at 11 p.m.; The Chamber by 411 votes to 29 voted a special credit of 183,000,000 francs for the Moroccan campaign. . The vote precoded a debate in ‘which the speeches foreshadowed the Government’s certainty or an enormous victory. M. Painleve, replying to questions, twice denied the report that la:',a had fallen. He reiterated that France’s aim was a modus vivendi permitting France, Spain, and the Riffs to work peacefully together. He added that peace would have to be restored in the French zone, where France was bound to protect the populations in her charge. A communique says that the French recaptured several villages near the Wergha River in the Fez-el-Bali region and released 100 women and children whom the enemy held as hostages to induce the Fichtala tribe to join the Riffians. Enemy pressure at Wergha continues and largo concentrations are also reported in other sectors.—Reuter.
