FREIGHTER KAHIKA BUFFETED.

SEVEN DAYS’ TRIP FROM HOBART

Strong gales and heavy seaa were responsible for the late arrival of the Union Company’s freighter Kakika at Dunecbn from Hobart, the vessel entering port yesterday afternoon after a passage of seven days throe and a-haif hours. The vessel, after loading about 412,000 ft of timber and 1500 bundles of palings, left Hobart at 10.50 a.m. on Friday last. Fine weather prevailed until 4 p.m. the following day, when strong south-east winds and heavy seas were encountered. The wind increased in force, and blow with gale force on the night of July 5. The ship was assailed by continuous heavy seas, and several big waves were shipped forward, but no damage was done. The gale raged until Thursday morn, ing, and for four days tho Kahika s speed was reduced. Tho gale was at its height on Wednesday, when speed waa reduced to 3.1 knots, and tho ship later practically hove to for 14 hours. On July 5 tho Kahika logged only 5.3 knots, on July 6, 5.9 knots, and on July 7, 6.5 knots. Tho gale inodciatod when the vessel was within 60 miles of Puysegur Point, and fine weather thou prevailed until the lower harbour was reached, at 3.30 p.m. yesterday. From Puysegur Point tho Kahika averaged nine knots. The Kahika some weeks ago carried «. cargo of ooko from Port Kembla to Sfcrahan, and then loaded a cargo of copper ore at tho latter port for Hobart. Her present cargo will be distributed as follows; Dunedin, 231,740 ft of timber, 300 bundles of palings,, and 6000 ft of timber for tramshipment to Gisborne; Lyttelton, 178,10 Mt of timber, 1150 bundles of palings, and 2U cases of pulp; Wellington, 2000 ft of timber. The vessel also brought five bogs of Xaemanian mails for New Zealand.
