A TWENTY-YEAR COMPARISON, How the consumption of various articles has grown in New Zealand is shown by a return presented to the legislative Council the other day. The following figures are given for 1004 Tobacco, 1,055,5631 b; cigarettes and cigars, £110,617 worth; wine 130,130 gallons; tea, 5,225,6681 b ; coffee, cocoa’, and chicory, 550,7201 b; sugar, 04,522,0801 b; ad valorem goods, £1,008,387 in value. It is remarkable that in 1920 the consumption of coffee, cocoa, and chicory was 1,177,3431 b, and that 'ln'l9l7 it was only 235,3301 b. The consumption of spirits in New Zealand in 1904 totalled 617,135 gallons, 2.46 gallons per he %l of the male adult population, the duty being £517,724, or £l,los 4d per head.
