(Pee United Press Association.) GISBORNE, July 10. In the Supreme Court this morning Mr Justice Ostler gave judgment in the case in which a Native named Sam Cotter petitioned against the Crown’s action in reentering upon a leasehold property for nonpayment of rent. The evidence showed that the Land Board had difficulty in securing the rent from the petitioner, and finally re-entered into possession a few days later. The petitioner tendered the amount of the arrears, but the Commissioner refused to accept it, making an order relieving the petitioner from forfeiture, on condition that he paid the Crown costs and all arrears of rent. His Honor said that the right of re-entry for non-payment of rent was always regarded in equity merely as a security for the payment of rent. It is. reported that Taranaki Oil Wells have assumed a controlling interest in the Gisborne Oil Proprietary, which has recently Peon investigating the .possibilities of petroleum development in this district, and geologists will come to Oisbomo from Taranaki for detailed survey work. Evidence was given that defendant, in applying for a pension, declared his personal belongings were £4O in the Savings Bank. When inquiries were made it was found, however, that ho really had £515 deposited. Defendant said his action was just foolishness. Council for the Commissioner of Pensions said he did not desire to press for a heavy penalty, but the action was brought as a warning. The Magistrate, after warning defendant of the seriousness of the charge, ordered him to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months, and to pay costs. WELLINGTON, July 10. After a lengthy debate the Wellington City Council last night decided to adopt a universal tram fare of -4d per medium of a 12-trip ticket, the present fare to remain for a one-trip ride. The Court of Appeal to-day granted the Law Society a rule absolute to strike Henry Edward Elliott off the roll of solicitors. CHRISTCHURCH. July 10. In the Police Court Charles Jackson was sentenced, to three months in gaol on a charge of having loft Now Zealand without permission within one year of the making of an affiliation order against him.
