PARLIAMENT.
YESTERDAY’S PROCEEDINGS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. (Abridged from Press Association Telegram.) WELLINGTON, July 10. The House met at 2.30 p.m. LEVEL CROSSINGS. Replying to Mr MTlvride, the PRIME MINISTER said that a certain amount of money had been allocated out of the Railway Improvement Fund for the improvement and the abolition of certain railway level crossings. They would not be able to deal with all the crossings at once because they had not the money to do it, but a certain programme had been laid down by which it was hoped from this time out the greatest clanger would be overcome. At the same time ho desired to impress upon the public that if they only took ordinary care when approaching a crossing and stopped and looked out for the engine, accidents would be reduced by 93 per cent.
QUESTION OF FUSION,
Mr HOLLAND asked the Prime Minister if he would make a statement to the House on the subject ot fusion, as the present position of the House was most unsatisfactory. The fact was that -the Liberal Party was recognised os the official opposition, but it was not functioning as an opposition, and therefore, as ho had said, the position was unsatisfactory. Mr COATES said he would make a statement later on, but not at present. He advised the Leader of the Labour Party to possess his soul in patience. The debate on Mr Atmoro’s amendment to the Address-in-Reply was then proceeded with, a full report of which appears under a separate heading. On the motion of Mr COMBS the debate was adjourned. At 0.35 a.m. the House rose till 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
