A SENSATIONAL MATCH. In the match between the Players and the Gentlemen the Players mad© 403 for eight wickets declared (Sandham 50, Parsons 72, Hcarne 103, Kennedy 59 nob out). The Gentlemen made 412 for nine wickets (Calthorpe 63, Tennyson 69, Haig 98, Allen 93 not out). The partnership between Allen and Haig put on 123 runs for the ninth wicket. Allen and Haig’s achievement in the Gentlemen v. Players’ match at the Oval ■was the sensation of the week. The first wicket put on 113. Then Tate took five wickets for 37. Tennyson brilliantly stopped the rot, hitting one six and nine fours. When Haig joined Allen, however, the Gentlemen required 37 to save a follow on. Both played with the greatest caution, though generally hitters, and refused to take risks. There was a hurricane of cheering when the Players’ total was passed. Each batsmen was then 90.
