THE NEW ZEALAND NAVY.
RECRUITS FOR ROYAL MARINES. (Fbom Ode Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, June 12. Cabinet approved yesterday of tho proposal that 20 local entries should be made for tho Royal Marines as an experiment. The Minister of Defence stated to-day that in 1923 permission wa s given for the New Zealand authorities to apply to tho Admiralty for detachments of Royal Marines for his Majesty’s ships of the New Zealand division, and the first batch arrived in the dominion in 1924. It was now proposed to go a step farther and ascertain whether suitable rocurits could 'be entered locally, thus ensuring that all ranks of tho New Zealand division of tho navy were opened to local candidates. It would bo necessary to obtain tho concurrence of tho Admiralty in the scheme and also for a portion of the training to be carried out in England. As tho recruits whom it was proposed to enter would be in lieu of seamen recruits, no additional expense would be involved in their training.
