MANCHESTER UNITY.

Loyal Centenary Lodge held a well attended meeting, N.G. Bro. IV. Leoffler presiding, it was reported that the recent social showed a small credit balance. G.M. Bro. Corbett and P.G. Bro. M'Alian were appointed to the Ball Committee. G.M. Bro. F. Froudo was elected to the Handbook Committee. A discussion took place on the proposals of the United Friendly Societies’ Council regarding Hospital hods, and it was resolved that these were not satisfactory, and that no action bo taken. A card shield match took place with the Hand and Heart Lodge, resulting in a narrow victory for Centenary by 17 games to 16. The toasts were made by Loyal Valley and Hand and Heart, and also by D.P.G.jU. Bro. G. Clarke and P.P.G.M. Bro. lloseveare for the executive. N.G. Sister L. Clements presided over a large attendance of members at the meeting of the Loyal Queen of Otago. Two proposals for membership were received. The lodge choir reported regular practises. The deputation to the Medical Club regarding Hospital treatment reported progress, and members desiring to talie advantage of the scheme were requested to hand in their names. It was agreed to join with the male lodge in their o-ction regarding doctor and chemist. P.P.G.M. Bro. T. Middlemans held a degree meeting, conferring these on several sisters. Practices in initiation ceremony work were held by members of both lodges, each showing good form. The meeting of the Loyal Valley Lodge was presided over by N.G. Bro. T. O’Shea, their being a good attendance of members. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Bro. J. V. Macdonald, who has suffered a bereavement in the loss of his daughter. P.G. Bro. W. J. Hutton was elected as delegate to the Handbook Committee and P.G. Bro. Cockburn and Bro. Livers delegates to the annual Ball Committee. It was decided to pay a return visit to the Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge on Tuesday, June 16. One now member was initiated and two wore proposed. It was decided to celebrate the lodge anniversary on August 12 by a dance and a church parade. N.G. Bro. G. B. Scott presided over a fair attendance at the Loyal Milton Lodge. it was reported that practices for the initiation ceremony competition had been regularly carried on and a “try out” resulted m the officers receiving the hearty commendation of many Past Grands present. It was announced with regret that N.G. Bro. Scott, having to undergo an operation, could not take part in the forthcoming competition. Several matters were discussed during the evening, and the lodge closed after a report by the sick visitors had been made. N.G. Bro. Simm presided over a good gathering of juveniles at the Loyal Pioneer Lodge, Kaitangata. One proposal for membership was received. The main business was the election of officers for the ensuing term, and after keen competition the following were elected: —N.G., Bro. R. Carson; V-G. Bro. J. Miller; E. 5.," Bro. J. Gribben; Warden, Bro. E. Crowe; Guardian, Bro. E. M’Milla’n; G.M., Bro. W. Simm. G.M. Bro. llatcliffe ably conducted the installation ceremony. Keen interest was evidenced in the last meeting of the Loyal Pride of Kaitangata Lodge, when N.G. Bro. Hislop presided oyer a large attendance. Two candidates were initiated and three proposed. A lengthy discussion took place on medical management. It was stated that the lodge has no say in the control of the medical officer, that power being in the hands of the local Medical Club. G.M. Bro. Robertson and P.P.G.M. Bro. Middlemans spoke in favour of a change, and it was resolved after discussion that a deputation wait on the Medical Club with an endeavour to secure a pro rata influence in the engagement and control of the medical officer and chemist. . A large attendance greeted N.G. Bro. Geo. Allen at the meeting of the Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge, Port Chalmers. The lodge was in mourning out of respect >or tfte memory of the late P.G. Bro. Jackson. More than passing reference was made to the good qualities and devoted service of the late brother. P.G. Bro. Jackson had been closely identified with the work of the lodge for manv years. He was well known both locally and in the city lodges, his fine collection of lantern views, always willingly displayed, having served to pass many pleasant and instructive evening. P.P.G.M. Bro. A. Cable and P.G. Bro. W. Campbell spoke of the deceased as a fine Oddfellow* and a staunch friend. A ladies’ night was held later, with an attendance of over 100. This proved a marked success, card playing and games being indulged in. During the evening musical items were contributed by Mrs Brown, Mrs W. J. Johnston. Mrs and Miss Jamieson and Bro. Fitzgerald, and P.P.G.M. Bro. A. Cable also entertained in a characteristic “stump speech.” Mrs Brown thanked the lodge on behalf of the ladies.
