GENERAL NEWS.

The monthly meeting of the Caversham School Committee was held in the head master’s office on Monday evening. Mr R. 11. Todd presided over an attendance one short of the total, and tho head master (Mr G. T. Palmer, M.A.) was also present. The head master reported that the roll number stood at 657, with an average of 621. Pen and ink money to tho extent of £7 0s Cd had been received, and savings bank deposits for the month amounted to £G 16s Sd. Tho school had been closed during Show 3Veek, and the usual medical inspection was made during May by the medical officers. A circular was received from the chairman of the Education Court at the forthcoming Exhibition. asking for financial support. The suggestion was heartily supported, and the committee voted a donation of £5 ss. The delegates to tho School Committees’ Association reported to the meeting. , Tho Concert Committee reported that tho profit on the last concert was close on £l2. This was considered highly satisfactory, and the committee was asked to meet and consider the advisability of a further effort. Messrs L. Morcicr and J. C. 3Vhito, who were appointed to represent the committee at the meeting called to confer with tho Director of Education with regard to tho overcrowding of the schools on the Flat together with the Junior High Schools system also reported on. They found the director fully alive to the acuteness of the position, and felt sure that strong representations would be made by him in tho proper quarter. The weekly meeting of the Rescue Lodge, No. 105, International Order of Good Templars, was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, King Edward street, when there was a. good attendance of members and visitors. Acknowledgements of letters of sympathy were received from Mrs Massey and family and Mrs Fairmaid and family. A letter from Bro. Geo. Price (chairman of the State of the Order Committee) in reference to the self denial effort was received and the lodge decided fo hold self denial at next meeting. Bro. C. Wilson, 0.T., Hope of DunWlin, was present, and gave a short address. 'A s ho was about to visit the North Island, ho was requested to convey the greetings of the Rescue to sister lodges. The usual vote of thanks to the visitors was responded to by Bro. J. Robertson (Hope of Dunedin Lodge). Prcvtoiis (o the meeting of the adult lodge tho Star of the South Juvenile Temple met under Bro. 0. Hilton, 5.J.3V., and there was a largo attendance, and a good programme submitted bv tho members.
