“BE PREPARED.”

MR RAYMOND’S ADVICE. (FliOil Oucr Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, June 11. Two of the men who did great work in the interests of our soldiers in London during the war were Mir I. W. Raymond and Mr Douglas ATLean, neither of whom, strange to say, apart from the ranks of tho soldiers, received adequate recognition of their labours. At a returned soldiers’ function hero yesterday very complimentary references were made to the excellent work done by those two New Zealanders. Replying, Mr Raymond said that one oi the biggest friends tho Diggers had in London was Mr Douglas ATLean. The Government in Now Zealand, ho continued, had done, up to a point, as much as it could for the returned soldiers in England. Me did not believe in any prospects of universal peace, and he was not a believer in the League of Nations, which was the scheme of o well-moaning pacifist to draw the teeth of the British lion. Our possessions gave us obligations and responsibilities that wo could not get away from It was useless to talk of universal peace unloss there were a complete change in human nature. He advised the returned soldiers to continue with their organisations, which had already done a great work. ]f other countries knew (hat the Empire was ready (hero would bo no war, but if it wore known that the Empire was not prepared, war would eventuate. His advice was “Bo prepared.”
