SUPREME COURT.
PRISONERS SENTENCED. (Per United Press Association.? WELLINGTON, June 12. “This class of offence seems to be on the increase in this part of tlie dominion,” said Mr Justice MacGregor in the Supreme Court to-day in sentencing five prisoners on charges of breaking and entering and theft. “It must be put a stop to.” In respect of Norman Evans for breaking, entering, and theft at Napier, Mr Justice MacGregor said that Evans did not appear to have criminal instincts, and he admitted him to 12 months’ probation. William Smith, who was similarly charged, and who is awaiting trial on a charge of arson, was ordered to appear for sentence when called upon within 12 months. Albert Winson, who was charged with breaking, entering, and theft at Wellington, was said to have spent 12 out of tlie last 10 years of Ids life in gaol. He is aged 27. Counsel said tho man had never had a chance. Ho was sentenced to six months 011 each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. James William Young, aged 171, and David William Fisher, aged 19, were similarly charged. The Crown Prosecutor said tho police considered Fisher was the makings of a bad criminal. His Honor decided to give Young another chance, and ordered him to come up for sentence within 12 months if.called upon. Fisher received a sentence of six months' hard labour. NAPIER, Juno 12. At the Supreme Court to-day Mr Justice Ostler senlenood George IV i Lon for indecent assault on a male to six months’ bard labour. David Waihane, for Ihoft. was sentenced to 18 months’ probation; and Kuru Ripohau and Ned Hawkins, for indecent assault on a girl under 16 years of ago, received 12 months’ probation.
