CANADIAN TARIFF
PROTECTION ADVOCATED. MR MEIGHEN’S MOTION DEFEATED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, OTTAWA, June 2. The House of Commons defeated the motion by Mr Mcighcn calling for an immediate revision of the tariff on a definitely and consistently protective basis. The voting for the motion was 37, and against it 147. The majority against it was 110.—A. and N.Z. Cable. The Opposition Leader (Mr Arthur Mcighcn), in the House of Commons, moved a resolution asking the House to affirm that Canada, in view of world conditions, required an immediate revision of her tariff on \ definitely protective basis. Regarding Empire Preference, the resolution, while admitting the principle, declared that goods should be brought in through Canadian ports, but only when such imports did not interfere with the prosperity of the Canadian working men. It also asked- for the appointment of a. Tariff Commission.
