THE PRIMATE-ELECT.

TRIBUTE FROM AUCKLAND. A COURAGEOUS LEADER. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, February 15. A generous eulogy of the character and work of the Primate-Elect. Bishop Avenll, was delivered by Canon James during the morning service at St. Mary’s Cathedral yesterday. Dr Averill’s election had been acclaimed, said Canon Janies, throughout the length and breadth of the dominion, in which the new Archbishop had spent neatly the whole of his ministerial life. , j n charge of St. Michael’s, Christchurch, he achieved what was probably the most remarkable parochial work in the history of the Church in New Zealand. .After a ’ few years of vigorous pule as Bishop of Waiapu, he was called to Auckland to be their-own bishop. His energy and de- ' cision, his great capacity for work, his ‘ grasp of detail, his npe experience and soundness of judgment, his genius for at- ■ tracting the fervent loyalty of the clergy f and the laity alike., and his untir- ’ mg and devoted visitation and care of all ' ' parishes, great and small, his vast diocese, had combined to make him a true and real “Father in God.” Far beyond the bounds of the Anglican Church he was held in esteem by the whole '<• community for his strong personality and force of character, his large kindness of heart his ready sympathy and help in promoting all good causes, his evangelical zeal ’ and the powerful earnestness of his preach- ' m ?‘To he Primate and Archbishop,” said Canon James, “is no empty honour. Addi- ■ tional labour is laid upon him. but a heavier -V burden is the additional responsibility. > These are great days in which we live. 3 and they are also difficult days. The old •border ohangeth, yielding place to the new These days call for great adven- ■ ture and a timid loader at this hour would be a disaster to the Church. Wo know well our bishop's ideal of an adventurous church. Let us remember to-day the great responsibility that has fallen upon him. We are convinced that given the years of health and strength that seem - to lie before him he will go down to pos*e a great archbishop worthy to rank ... with his greatest predecessors.”
