Speaking at the launch of the steamer Amicus, at Jarrow, recently, Sir Alexander Kennedy, chairman and managing director of the Northumberland Shipbuilding Company (Ltd.), said that the vessel was the first of two sister ships they were building for Messrs W. H. Soagcr and Co. Their satisfaction :n turning out a good vessel, which they hoped would bo serviceable and profitable, was mingled with regret, in that there was no new order to fill the vacant berth. Tse sight of bare poles in so many shipyards was indeed pathetic. It had been known to excite such sympathy on tho part of shipowners as to draw forth a new order, and ho hoped their bare polos would prove a portent. During the prolonged depression they had had at intervals what appeared to be indications of an improvement in trade, but unfortunately somehow or other circumstances arose which darkened the outlook and prevented the improvement materialising. At tho present time there were some cheeringsigns of trade revival, and if the improvement which was apparent was not hindered by industrial troubles it was quite possible that times of prosperity might be near at hand,

Iho fust sale of tho salvaged articles attracted great interest and realised good prices. There is still a good deal of salvaged material to be disposed of. The heavier material, such as anchors, chains, blocks, etc., was sent north, and tho chart room, a very beautiful structure, has been retained by a local gentleman.
