A largo shipping- insurance claim, has lately boon settled, the- underwriters having paid" over £9OOO to the Chatham Islands Fishing Company, of Wellington, owners of the steamer Rama, in connection with the wreck of the vessel at the Chatham Islands. The Rama, it will bo remembered, touched an uncharted rock on the north-eastern side of the larger Chatham Island and began to leak badly. Despite the efforts of the engincroom staff the water gained at a serious rate, and it was found necessary to beach the vessel, which was abandoned to the underwriters. The Rama was insured for a total loss only. Tile vessel was formerly the war sloop Torch, and afterwards the Firebrand. She was used for patrolling the Pacific Islands. The vessel was purchased by the Chatham Islands Fishing Company, and at considerable cost converted into a passenger and cargo carrier for maintaining a service between Wellington and Lyttelton and the Chatham Islands.
