ATTITUDE OF CHURCH ASSEMBLY. SPIRITUAL IDEALS. % SAXON TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS. Pro so Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, February 13. The Church Assembly, on a motion by the Bishop of London, passed a resolution approving of the establishment of a council of overseas settlement. The council would disseminate information in regard to openings for settlers, and attend to their .selection and welfare. The council of 24 will include a chairman, nominated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and ten members nominated by the Assembly and the Bishop of London. it is understood the Government will contribute one-third of the working expenses, the total of which is estimated at £7600, and the dominions will guarantee another third. The Bishop of Salisbury said it was high time the Church made "itself felt in the matter. They were bound to uphold the spiritual ideals of the British Commonwealth. The best way to ensure a continuation also of the Saxon traditions and customs throughout the Empire was to give settlers to the dominions who were brought up in the right atmosphere. The Assembly accepted Bishop Fordsham’s amendment deleting from the adopted resolution the statement that council’s objects would be the promotion of the Government policy as embodied in the Empire Settlement Act.—Reuter.
