THE WEATHER.

NORTHERN STORM ABATES. (Feom Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, January 28. Yesterday’s storm petered out in the night, and to-day the weather is fine. Tho Weather Bureau reports that though the conditions have _ modified the atmospheric pressure is still rather low in the north; in fact, the disturbance intensified yesterday in the Auckland district. The barometric reading at Auckland last night was 29.42, and this morning it was reported as 29.79. At the same time tho barometric pressure has decreased in the south from 30.02 to 29.88 at Bluff. Tins decrease furnishes evidence of the approach of tho westerly disturbance which, as stated yesterday, was likely to exercise a modifying influence upon the severe conditions. The forecast is for a further rise of the barometer in tho north, and a further fall in the south. Easterly winds strong to a gale may be expected northwards of East Capo and Kawhia, southerly winds modifying and backing to northerlies, thence to Hokitika and Lyttelton, and northerlies elsewhere. The weather is likely to be changeable generally, and squally with rain probable in the northern and East Coast districts of tho North Island, and fair to cloudy elsewhere. A westerly change is likely to follow.
