CROMWELL JOCKHT CLUB. FIRST DATS RACING. (From Oxtr Speciax Reporter.) CEOMwffljL, January 8. The Cromwell Jockey Club opened its time-honoured meeting in beautifully flue weather, but a glaring sun made it rather trying to those experiencing the climate for the first time. The racing was interesting, and apart from that the officials endeavoured to make the meeting a good, * clean, sporting success, and succeeded in that direction. The sporting nature of the programme is indicated by the fact that two trophies went with the principal events, and a notable feature of the day consisted In the fact that Mr Russell, whose horse dead-heated in the principal event, gracefully waived his claim and allowed the owner who divided the honours with him to take the trophy. There is no doubt this was a sportsman’s sacrifice, as Mr Itussell is easily one of the most desirable type of-owners connected with the rfport. The day’s card passed off pleasantly, and always carried the atmosphere of a really good sporting function. Cairnmuir had to run the gauntlet of an inquiry for crossing over in the last race, and something also had to be said in connection with the Kawarau Trot, but the Judicial Committee did right in not disturbing the placings of the judge. During the day £37(11 went through the totalisator, as against £3884 10s last year. Results: — GOLDFIELDS HACK RACE, Of 55sovs. Six furlongs. 2—Mr S.
